I decided to add a bed end
shelf for my 2001 Coleman Santa Fe, but did not want to part with the $75 + the
stock shelf from Coleman cost.
Making this project difficult
was the fact that I had never seen one, only heard them described.
In figure #1 I identified and
located the two stock holes in the bed end support bar.
Figure #1
I obtained a piece of oak,
(1" X 3") and cut it to length. I routed out the center of this
to make a depressed shelf, leaving about 3" of solid wood at each end to
add the mounting hardware. In figure # 2 you can see how the shelf was
mounted. #1 is a standard "S" hook, attached to a brass chain
#2. The chain is attached to the shelf by way of a small nail. To
provide sufficient room for the shelf to fold up when the camper is closed, I
cut a small notch out of the rear of the shelf to provide clearance for the
chain. At the front of the shelf, I used a 2 pop rivets as the hinge
pivot, hammering the "bar" part of the rivets into the wood
(pre-drilled).
Figure # 2
Figure 3 shows the completed
shelf.
